MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
My family has been in the food business since just after WWII when my grandfather Leonardo, formerly a goldsmith in Treviso had to start afresh with a new job due to the miserable economic conditions in Italy.
He moved to Genoa in 1929, where his first cousin had opened a cheese and salami shop, and after a few years he found an empty space in Castelletto, a high class neighbourhood, where he ran his own high-end, popular deli shop for 50 years.
My father, my uncle and I followed in his footsteps to make our name synonymous with top quality food, expanding our interests to bars and a Michelin star restaurant, The Torre dei Greci, near to the Genoa Marinas. In this restaurant I met a lot of nice people, in particular three maritime businessmen.
During one dinner, they told me: “we could use your skills and your knowledge in the yachting industry, Genoa needs it”.
Two days later I sent them a proof of a food & beverage list with over 2.000 items.
Genoa International Supplies (GIS) was created a few weeks later, just in time for the 2002 MYBA Charter Meeting, the second to be held in Genoa.
And here we are today, the company has grown, our catalogue has over 18000 items now and we have been proud to help more than 1200 yachts.
